Types Of Remote Training Devices
When you start training your dog as to the expected behavior in your home, you want to be aware the moment an inappropriate behavior occurs. Corrections made long after the bad behavior takes place are worthless. As the behavior is occurring is the time you can teach your dog right from wrong. Your dog simply won’t be able to make the connection between the bad behavior and your expectations if corrective actions are delayed.
Dog Behavior Monitors
Motion sensitive devices that emit a sound to let you know that your pet is in the wrong place are invaluable for remote training. It can serve two purposes, one, to alert you to the incident and two, to deter your pet by first startling him and secondly by the swiftness of your response. Even more elaborate are camera systems designed to “spy” on mischievous pets. If your dog is sneaking into forbidden zones, these sensor devices might be worthwhile.
Remote Dog Training Devices
There are a wide variety of remote dog training devices on the market. There are audible hand-held devices for off-leash control that are pressed by you to send a signal to your dog. Other audible units emit an uncomfortable sound when motion sensors are remotely triggered by your dog. Some have ultrasonic frequencies that are inaudible to humans, while others are detectable by the human ear.
The distance that each unit can cover before it becomes ineffective should be taken into account. Ultrasonic units are usually most effective only at short ranges and lose efficacy as distance increases. Keep in mind that audible units that produce loud sounds will scare you too when you press the button or step into range. This might not be a good idea if you or your dog tends to be within range of the unit during inconvenient times, such as pre-dawn or late night.
Physical Dog Training Devices
For really hard to manage pets, physical correction tools are extremely effective. They include electrically charged mats, dog training collars and unpleasant smelling products such as ammonia or pepper. Electric mats offer a few levels of stimulation, and when your dog puts his feet on it, it will sting. Electronic dog collars work in a similar way, except that you can control the level of stimulation using a remote control device.
You should never hurt your dog. These tools are only intended to send off unpleasant sensations, not to physically endanger your pet. Only use products that are specifically labeled as safe for pets and only use as much sensation as is needed to immediately distract your dog and stop it from continuing the unwanted behavior.
Remember, to the dog you should not appear involved in this. The stinging sensation came as a result of your dog’s behavior, which is unrelated to you. Say nothing or if anything is needed, limit it to merely acknowledging your dog when it comes to you for comfort or safety. In other words, don’t fuss over it, your dog needs to associate the unpleasant situation with its errant behavior and not use it to seek extra attention or treats or whatever else from you.
