Teaching Your Dog The Command “Off”
Teach Your Dog to Obey Off
“Off” is the command to use when your dog is on something you want him to get off from. You’ll need to implement a low and firm tone of voice for the “off” command. An indignant squeal from you won’t do the trick. Your dog will just interpret this as either fun or fear.
Unless trained to obey “Off”, you dog might pretend not to hear you, especially if a particular spot is comfortable. Once he’s learned the command, in most cases, particularly when your dog has previously been warned not to do something, your annoyed tone and the word “Off” will get your point across.
If your dog is prone to jumping on you, you will have to slip your hand into his collar and pull him “Off” you sideways. Exercise care to get him to the ground firmly but without causing you or your dog harm. In other words, physically move him, but don’t yank him up or toss him. With repetition and consistent enforcement, your dog will stop jumping up on you.
